About Excelsior

Excelsior is located approximately 29 km south-east of Verkeerdevlei along the R703 Regional Route and 35 km north of Tweespruit along the R709 Regional Route, and forms the northern boundary of Mantsopa Local Municipality.

Excelsior is also located about 104 km north-east of Bloemfontein (the Provincial Capital) and is also directly linked to Thaba ‘Nchu and Winburg via untarred roads.

Excelsior was founded in 1910 by farmers who became tired of travelling the long distance between Ladybrand and Winburg and subsequently decided to erect their own “Halfway House”.

The first sandstone dam was built in 1924 and is today used to store water for cattle.

Excelsior is a farming town and has since built a weather station that provides very accurate readings to help the farmers plan for agricultural purposes.
