Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd is South Africa’s primary electricity supplier, generating approximately 90% of the electricity used in South Africa.
Eskom is an entity of the Department of Electricity and Energy under the National Government of South Africa.
The strategic role of Eskom remains to enable economic growth by providing a reliable and predictable electricity supply in an efficient and sustainable manner.
Eskom also contributes to job creation, skills development, transformation and Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE), in support of the National Development Plan (NDP) and other country initiatives.
Eskom is split into three state-owned entities focusing on generation, transmission and distribution. The plans of unbundling Eskom into these three entities were announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa during a State of the Nation Address in February 2019.
In December 2021, Eskom legally transferred its transmission division to the National Transmission Company South Africa (NTCSA); 374 transmission lines with a total length of 33,199 km, 500 three-phase transformers with a total capacity of 159,384 MVA located at 169 transmission substations were transferred to the NTCSA.
