About
The Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma Local Municipality was established after the 2016 municipal elections by merging the Kwa Sani and Ingwe local municipalities.
The municipality is named after Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, a medical doctor, politician, and former anti-apartheid activist who was born in the former Natal province.
The Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma Local Municipality is geographically located in the northern region of the Harry Gwala District Municipality.
The Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma Local Municipality comprises 15 wards and covers an area of 3,602 km² (1,391 square miles), making it the largest of four local municipalities in the Harry Gwala District, as it accounts for just over a third of its geographical area.
The Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma Local Municipality is bordered by:
- Greater Kokstad and uMzimkhulu Local Municipalities to the south
- Johannes Phumani Phungula Local Municipality to the southeast
- Richmond and Msunduzi Local Municipalities in the uMgungundlovu District Municipality to the east
- Impendle Local Municipality in the uMgungundlovu District Municipality to the north
- The country of Lesotho to the west
The administrative headquarters/seat of the Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma Local Municipality is in Creighton.
The Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma Municipality is the administrative and commercial centre for the district. The rest of the municipal area comprises tribal lands, which dominate the area.
The Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma Local Municipality is home to the popular World Heritage Site of Ukhahlamba.
Population
According to the South African National Census of 2022, the Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma Local Municipality has a population of 128,565 people, compared to 118,480 in 2016 and 103,318 in 2011.
The municipality has a population growth per annum of 2.12%.
According to the 2022 Census, 32.8% of the population is under the age of 15, 60.6% is between 15 and 64, and 6.5% is over 65.

The Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma municipal council is comprised of 29 members elected by mixed-member proportional representation.
Fifteen councillors are elected by first-past-the-post voting in 15 wards, while the remaining 14 are chosen from party lists so that the total number of party representatives is proportional to the number of votes received.
In the election of 1 November 2021, the African National Congress (ANC) won a majority of 16 seats on the council.
