Dr JS Moroka Local Municipality is geographically situated in the northwestern part of the Nkangala District Municipality.
The municipality is named after James Sebe Moroka, the 8th President-General of the African National Congress.
Dr JS Moroka Local Municipality covers an area of 1,416 km² (547 square miles), making it the smallest local municipality in the Nkangala District as it accounts for 8% of its geographical area.
The administrative headquarters/seat of Dr JS Moroka Local Municipality is in Siyabuswa.
The municipality is divided into 31 wards.
Dr JS Moroka Local Municipality is bordered by:
- Thembisile Hani Local Municipality to the south
- Elias Motsoaledi and Ephraim Mogale Local Municipalities in the Sekhukhune District in Limpopo Province to the east
