Geography and history
Deneysville is situated in the north-eastern region of the Metsimaholo Local Municipality, at the intersection of the R549 and R716 Regional Routes, approximately 31 km south-east of Sasolburg and 350 km north-east of Bloemfontein. Other larger centres such as Vereeniging (45 km to the north-west) and Vanderbijlpark (41 km to the north-west) are all within 50 km from Deneysville.
The town was established in 1939 around the Vaal Dam and named after Deneys Reitz, the son of former Orange Free State president Francis William Reitz.
Deneysville’s close proximity to the coal mining and industrial activities in Sasolburg and its nearby location to the large industrial complexes of Vereeniging and Vanderbijlpark, definitely influence economic activities in the town. The strong recreational character of the town further enhances this phenomenon.
The proximity of the dam makes Deneysville the yachting mecca. Two of the most well-known boat races are Keel Boat Week held at Deneysville Aquatic Club and Round The Island Yacht Race which is held at Lake Deneys Yacht Club.
