The City of Matlosana Local Municipality is geographically located in the central region of the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality.
The City of Matlosana Local Municipality comprises 39 wards and covers an area of 3,602 km² (1,391 square miles), making it the smallest of three local municipalities in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District, as it accounts for a quarter of its geographical area.
The administrative headquarters/seat of the City of Matlosana Local Municipality is in Klerksdorp.
The City of Matlosana Local Municipality is bordered by:
- JB Marks Local Municipality to the east and north
- Ditsobotla Local Municipality to the Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality to the north and northwest
- Tswaing Local Municipality in the Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality to the west
- The Maquassi Hills Local Municipality to the southwest and south
- Nala Local Municipality in the Lejweleputswa District Municipality in the Free State Province to the south
- Moqhaka Local Municipality in the Fezile Dabi District Municipality in the Free State Province to the southeast
Population
According to the South African National Census of 2022, the City of Matlosana Local Municipality has a population of 431,231 people, compared to 417,282 in 2016 and 398,676 in 2011.
The municipality has a population growth per annum of 0.76%.
According to the 2022 Census, 26.5% of the population is under the age of 15, 66.8% is between 15 and 64, and 6.7% is over 65.
Racial makeup
According to the 2022 Census, 81% of the population in the City of Matlosana Local Municipality describe themselves as Black African, 14.5% as White, 3.5% as Coloured, and 0.8% as Indian/Asian.
Languages
According to the 2022 Census, 36.7% of the population speaks Setswana as their first language, 20.3% speak Sesotho, 17.6% speak Afrikaans, 14.3% speak isiXhosa, and 11.1% speak other languages.
