The City of Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality stretches from Gordon’s Bay to Atlantis and includes the suburbs of Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha.
It covers an area of 2,446 km² (944 square miles) and has a coastline of 294 km.
The City of Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality is bordered by municipalities, Swartland and West Coast to the north, Drakenstein, Stellenbosch, and Cape Winelands to the northeast, and Theewaterskloof, Overstrand, and Overberg to the southeast. The Atlantic Ocean also bounds it to the south and west.
The City of Cape Town is South Africa’s second-largest economic centre and second most populous city after Johannesburg.
It is the provincial capital and primate city of the Western Cape, as well as the legislative capital of South Africa, where the National Parliament and many government offices are located.
The City is famous for its harbour, as well as its natural setting in the Cape Floral Kingdom, including such well-known landmarks as Table Mountain and Cape Point.
The City of Cape Town is hailed as one of the most beautiful cities in the world and Africa’s most popular tourist destination.
Because it is the oldest city in South Africa, it is affectionately known as ‘The Mother City‘.

According to the South African National Census of 2022, the City of Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality has a population of 4,772,846 residents, compared to 4,005,016 in 2016, and 3,740,031 in 2011.
The municipality has a population growth per annum of 2.37%.
According to the 2022 Census, 22.4% of the population is aged under 15, 70.9% is between 15 and 64, and 6.7% is over 65.
Racial makeup
According to the 2022 Census, 45.7% of the population in the City of Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality describe themselves as Black African, 35.1% as Coloured, 16.2% as White, and 1.6% as Indian/Asian.
Languages
According to the 2022 Census, the first language of 45.7% of the population is Xhosa, while 35.1% speak Afrikaans, 20.4% speak English, and 6.1% speak other languages.
Economy
The main economic sectors of the city are; finance and business services (36.1%), manufacturing (16.1%), trade and hospitality (15.6%), community services and general government (15.0%), transport, storage and communication (11.2%), construction (4.1), electricity (1.1%), agriculture (0.7%), and mining (0.1%).
Municipal council and management
The City of Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality is governed by a 231-member city council.
The city is divided into 116 wards, each of which elects a councillor by first-past-the-post voting. The remaining 115 councillors are elected from party lists so that the total number of councillors for each party is proportional to the number of votes received by that party.
