Boknesstrand, also known as Boknes, is a small seaside town situated at the mouth of the Boknes River in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa.
The town is situated close to Cannon Rocks, Bushman’s River Mouth, Kenton-on-Sea, Alexandria, and Port Alfred.
Boknesstrand falls within the Ndlambe Local Municipality and the Sarah Baartman District Municipality.
History
The town was formerly called Jammerfontein. It takes its current name from the Boknes River. Boknes is derived from Khoekhoen and means ‘father’s river’. The forms Bocna, Bokana, etc., are also encountered.
