The Amahlathi Local Municipality is geographically located in the central region of the Amathole District Municipality.

The name Amahlati is an isiXhosa word that means “a place where many trees are grouped together, a forest”. Forests are a key feature of the region.

Amahlathi Local Municipality comprises 15 wards and covers an area of 4,505 km² (1,739 square miles), making it the second-largest of six local municipalities in the Amathole District.

The administrative headquarters/seat of Amahlathi Local Municipality is in Stutterheim.

Population

According to the South African National Census of 2022, Amahlathi Local Municipality has a population of 115,703 people, compared to 101,826 in 2016 and 101,035 in 2011.

The municipality has a population growth per annum of 1.32%.

According to the 2022 Census, 27.8% of the population is under the age of 15, 62.7% is between 15 and 64, and 9.5% is over 65.

Racial makeup

According to the 2022 Census, 96.5% of the population in Amahlathi Local Municipality describe themselves as Black African, 2% as White, 1.2% as Coloured, and 0.1% as Indian/Asian.

According to the 2022 Census, 93.4% of the population speaks isiXhosa as their first language, 2.9% speak English, 2% speak Afrikaans, and 1.7% speak other languages.
